Modern skate culture is being driven away from its roots. Corporations and high profile individuals are trying to change the face of skateboarding, arguably for the worst.
Skateboarding is not a sport and it never has been; it has always been an art form. Unfortunately, the only skateboarding ever shown to the masses is watered-down, mass-marketable skating. I want you to think about the X-Games and count how many logos and brands you see.
The true death of culturally significant skateboarding occurred when skate shops opened up in malls and tourist destinations. Corporations such as Vans and Zumiez have sucked the life out of local stores and have decimated the culture. Every skate park and local skate spot is covered with people wearing brand name, flashy, soulless gear and riding overpriced, decadent boards
So much focus is placed on skate parks today it is appalling. Community leaders try to corner and segregate skateboarders off from the public eye. Have you ever seen a skate park in or near a nice neighborhood or shopping district? Have you ever seen a skate park not on the patrol route of some police officer? Some people fear skating because of its “image,” but the only thing skateboarding promotes is individuality.
Skateboarders need to support local shops, make their own skate films, and do whatever the hell they want. Skateboarders need to break out of confined, small, and rundown skate parks and get back to the streets where skateboarding was created. Fortunately, there will always be those that break the rules, stay true to their roots, and innovate
